The Modi government is known for unexpected decisions, the senior-most IB hardcore officer, Sunil Acharya  currently in R&AW, may be considered for the top job. After the 1988 batch officer Deka, he is a 1991 batch IPS officer of Nagaland cadre. He is considered a thorough professional. Though Acharya is currently in R&AW, and chances of his being appointed R&AW chief next year will be touch and go for him.
